Ribbon-Covered Canisters Tutorial

Today I gave my boyfriend a ride to work. Since he works a couple of doors down from Dollar Tree (one of my favorite dollar stores!), I decided to stop in and see what I could find. In the gift wrapping section, I found these great cardboard canisters. I grabbed them along with a few other tidbits, brought them home, and dressed them up! Here's how:

Draw a line around the canister just under where the lid sits. This is so that you know how far up the canister to cover with ribbon. Place strips of double-sided tape vertically around the canister every couple of inches, running the strips from just below the line to just above the bottom of the canister.

Starting at the bottom of the canister, carefully wrap ribbon around the canister, securing in place with the strips of tape. When you get all the way around, trim the ends of the ribbon so that there is as little overlap as possible. Start and end each stripe in the middle of one of the strips of tape so that the ends are secured in place. (My ribbon, consequently, came from the dollar store too!)

Put a strip of double sided tape around the edge of the lid and give it a stripe of ribbon as well.

Decorate the lid with glass fishbowl stones. (Mine came from - you guessed it! - the dollar store.) Use a glue you know will hold them in place - I used Mod Podge! You could also decorate the lid with pretty rocks or beach glass, beads, shells, or anything else you have laying around.

The finished canisters are great for decorating. Or, fill them with cookies or other treats and give them as gifts!
